Students are expected to conform to the uniform policy which is detailed in the College Prospectus. Students must always present a clean, neat and tidy appearance in College and while going to and from College during the day. If students are unable to wear any item of College uniform then parents/guardians should write a note in the College Planner. Please label all items.
Any unacceptable item of clothing or jewellery will be confiscated and returned only with written permission from parents. The same will happen to items which should not have been brought to College.
Parents are expected to support the College’s uniform policy so if there is any uncertainty in interpreting the policy they should contact the College before purchasing any item.
Boys’ and Girls’ uniform is virtually the same:
• A maroon blazer with College badge
• White or grey shirt – a standard school shirt with a normal (not soft) collar (with a top button which is done up) and long enough to be tucked into trousers
• Trousers which are plain and tailored, black or grey, and without unnecessary decoration
• The College tie or House tie
• Black or dark brown, polished leather shoes of closed design covering the instep. For reasons of safety shoes should be flat. Closed insteps are necessary for protection in practical subjects. Boots and sports shoes are not acceptable.
Additional Notes
• In addition to the blazer students may wear a plain, black v-neck jumper (this is to be worn under the blazer, and not instead of the blazer)
• Any reasonable outside coat may be worn but not if it carries offensive lettering or graphic designs. Coats must not be of leather, simulated leather or denim
• A scarf may be worn (but this must be plain and football scarves are not allowed)
• Suitable bags for carrying all books and school equipment must be used – handbags are not acceptable
• A protective apron is needed for Creative Studies and Science
• Although students may choose to wear trainers when playing ball games on the courts or fields during Break and Lunch Time, trainers must not be worn around the College
• Occasionally, if the weather is forecast to be warm over a prolonged period, the College will call a “blazer off” day. Blazers should still be brought into College but, for travel around the College and for certain lessons, they need not be worn
• Students may wear one small pair of ear studs or very small earrings (maximum 10mm diameter): one in each ear; they may also wear a single, discreet, finger ring (in some cases staff may request that these be removed)
• Body piercings with inserted jewellery are not allowed to visible parts of the body (with the exception of ear studs/earrings above). Students wearing normally-unseen body piercing items will be told to remove them (storing them at their own risk) during PE lessons for health and safety reasons
• Body markings (e.g. tattoos) to visible parts of the body are not permitted
• Hats – Students may wear a hat (such as a baseball cap) provided it has no offensive slogans on it, as follows:
• In very hot weather
• In very cold or wet weather
Hats may not be worn between or inside buildings
Jewellery, Hair Styles and Make-up
All jewellery (including ear studs and small earrings as well as watches) must be removed for PE and, whilst every effort is made to keep them safe during lessons, the College takes no responsibility for the safe keeping of any property. It is therefore suggested that expensive watches and jewellery are not worn to College.
Exaggerated hair styles and clothing are not allowed in College and students with unacceptable appearance will either be isolated internally or sent home (we will accept nothing less than a Grade 3 and will not accept tramlines). Students in Years 7-11 may not wear make-up.
We are very keen that our distinctive College uniform is worn with pride, and welcome the support of parents in this matter. Where students are in break of the College Uniform policy we will take action which may include sending students home to attend to uniform discrepancies, giving detentions and, of course, contacting parents where appropriate.
